This is the point where this story really starts to turn into Call of Duty. I'm not ashamed to admit that. This chapter is called "A Ghillie in the Night". Personally, I like it. I hope you do too.
A Ghillie in the Night[]
It was around midnight as Deacon and Logan were in position, waiting for their eyes to adjust to the darkness. They were ready to infiltrate the Silent Fang’s base.
“Here’s the plan”, Deacon said. “We infiltrate the base, eliminating any enemies we come across while remaining undetected, and make our way to the headquarters. Once there, we find the commanding officer, and see if we can get any useful information out of him. After that, we clean up, and look for some transportation. You okay with that plan?”
“Sounds like a pretty decent plan to me”, Logan said. “Let’s go.”
The two moved forward through the dark forest, until they came across the small lake they had seen earlier. On the small wooden dock on the far side, there were two Silent Fang soldiers standing on opposite sides, looking at each other.
“How do you want to do this?” Logan asked in a whisper.
“Are you thinking what I’m thinking?” Deacon asked, also in a whisper.
“I think I am”, Logan said.
“Let’s do it”, Deacon said.
The two men stepped into the water, doing their best to make as little noise as possible. They swam to the other side, and took up positions behind the two guards. They then climbed up, grabbed the guards by their belts, pulled them down into the water, and slit their throats with their bayonets. They climbed out of the water, and readied their repeater crossbows.
“Two down”, Deacon said.
“Thirty-eight-ish to go”, Logan said.
They continued on until they came across a watchtower housing a Silent Fang sniper. The two Blood Brothers were about 40 yards away, crouching in tall grass, where the sniper couldn’t see or heard them.
“I’ll take this one”, Deacon said as he aimed at the sniper through the scope of his crossbow.
“Remember that crossbow bolts aren’t as fast as bullets, Deacon”, Logan said. “You should also account for wind drift and velocity messing up the path of your shot.”
“What kind of fucking language are you speaking?” Deacon asked in an agitated tone.
“Just shoot the bastard already”, Logan said.
Deacon aimed at the sniper, and took a shot, missing him and hitting the wood above him. The sniper was alerted, but Deacon killed him with a second shot before the sniper could figure out where the shot came from.
“You got him”, Logan said. “Let’s keep moving.”
Logan and Deacon kept moving. After crossing through a large bush, they found themselves in a large field covered with very tall grass. They moved forward until they heard a strange buzzing sound, and stopped dead in their tracks. They didn’t know what the sound was at first, but it quickly alerted them.
“Get down now!” Deacon whispered to Logan.
They went prone on their stomachs, the tall grass proving them with enough cover to remain invisible. They started crawling forward, until they saw twenty strange, fly like creatures coming walking in their direction. They resembled a mix of a human, spider, and fly, with a large head with a lot of large, yellow eyes, tendrils where their mouths should be, spider-like legs coming out of their backs, and appeared to be wearing a dirty white tunic. The creatures eventually walked past Logan and Deacon, who they couldn’t see. The two crawled slowly forward, and, when at a safe distance, they got up. When they started to move forward, Logan tripped and fell, making a loud noise. Deacon prepared to shoot the creatures, but they didn’t seem to hear the noise.
“What the hell were those things?” Logan asked quietly.
“I don’t know”, Deacon whispered. “They seem to be deaf. Let’s move before they come back.”
They made their way forward again, and eventually came across another watchtower with a sniper. Logan took out the sniper, and the two men climbed up the tower to get a look at the base, which they weren’t far from. They saw no enemies between them and the large wooden building, which they were sure was the headquarters. They exited the tower, and made their way to the headquarters. They entered the building, and saw that, aside from the staircase, the first floor completely barren. The second was like that of an office building, with hallways and rooms.
They went up the staircase, and, when they got to a hallway on the second floor, they could hear two voices conversing. They pressed their backs against a wall, and Logan peaked his head out to his right, where he saw to men, one of which was of average height and was wearing a typical uniform a Silent Fang trooper, while the other one, who appeared to be three feet and ten inches tall, was wearing an officer’s uniform. Not long after that, the officer went back into his office and closed the door, while the other one started coming in Logan and Deacon’s direction. When he entered Logan’s point of view, Logan grabbed him, placed his hand over the soldier’s mouth, and put his bayonet against his hostage’s throat.
“If you scream, you’re dead”, Logan whispered. “Do you understand?” The soldier nodded. “You’re going to tell me what I want to know.” Logan uncovered the man’s mouth. “How many of you are there?”
“There are forty of us”, the Silent Fang soldier said. “Well, twenty if you don’t count those weird creatures. We have 4 men on the outskirts, 2 in watchtowers, the other two on the dock. The others are all sleeping in the barracks.”
“Thank you”, Logan said before slitting the soldier’s throat, and quietly dropping his body to the ground. He and Deacon moved to both sides of the door of the door of the officer’s office, and prepared to breach. Deacon kicked the door open, and the two of them entered the room with their crossbows ready. The small officer was clearly terrified.
“Holy fuck!” the officer said. “Who the hell are you?! And what the hell are you wearing?!”
“We’re Blood Brothers”, Logan said.
“How did you get here?” the officer asked.
“That doesn’t matter”, Deacon said. “Tell us what we want to know, and you’ll get to live a few seconds longer.”
“Wait!” the officer said. “There’s something you need to know!”
“What?” Logan asked.
“We’ve been betrayed”, the officer said.
“What the hell are you talking about?” Deacon asked.
“The Silent Fang have this ritual sort of thing known as the Purification”, he said. “If it is discovered that there is a traitor in a certain branch, the entire branch is ordered to be eliminated. The South Bretonnian branch is being targeted.”
“What the fuck are you talking about?” Deacon asked.
“I’ve been informed that one of the Silent Fang’s leaders was spotted working with your organization”, the officer said.
“Who is it?” Logan asked.
“I’ve said too much”, the officer said before taking a revolver out of a drawer in his desk.
“Drop it!” Logan yelled. The officer placed the barrel of the gun against his right temple and, before Deacon or Logan could react, shot himself, alerting all of the garrison. Deacon and Logan knew it was time to get out of there. “It’s time to move!” Logan said.
Deacon and Logan set their repeater crossbows to automatic fire, and sprinted down to the first floor of the building. As they exited the building, a Silent Fang soldier threw a molotov at them. It missed, but it set the headquarters on fire. Logan and Deacon opened fire on the enemy, killing a total of 6 of them, leaving 8 Silent Fang still alive. They ran towards one of the smaller buildings, which appeared to be a barn, and went inside. Inside, they found two horses, as well as a carriage with a machine gun set up on the back of it.
“We can use this to get back to base”, Deacon said. “You shoot, I’ll drive.”
“This is where the fun begins”, Logan said as he took out his coin, flipped it, slapped it onto his left wrist, and placed it back into its pouch.
As Logan and Deacon were setting up the horses and carriage, they could hear the remaining Silent Fang forming outside the barn. When they were ready, Logan threw a lantern into one of the walls of the barn, setting it on fire. Deacon whipped the reins, and the two horses smashed straight through the gate of the barn. Logan immediately opened fire on the last of the Silent Fang, killed them all in seconds. Deacon steered the carriage through the field they had crawled through earlier. The creatures spotted them, and Logan opened fire at them. He missed a lot of shots, but was eventually able to kill them all. When they reached the road, Deacon stopped the cart. Logan then decided to go back and burn the last of the three buildings down, with Deacon following behind him. After that, they returned to the cart.
“How many did you get?” Deacon asked.
“I counted 7 Silent Fang, and all twenty of those creatures”, Logan said as he prepared to climb back into the cart.
“That means there’s one more”, Deacon said. Suddenly, the last Silent Fang trooper came out from behind a tree with an axe, and hit Logan in the left side of the head with the blade, knocking him to the ground. Deacon shot the man dead, and went to check on Logan. “Logan! Are you okay?” He removed Logan’s headwear, and saw that his left ear was nearly severed.
“No!” Logan said. “I’m most definitely not okay!”
Deacon helped Logan get into the seat at the front of the cart, and got the horses moving again. Logan put his headwear back on.
“We have to get back to base”, Deacon said. “We have to tell Ragnar what that midget told us.”
“Yeah”, Logan said while gripping the left side of his head. “I don’t think our job is done just yet.”
