Time for the first proper chapter in 'Angels & Demons: The Unholy Ones'. This one is called "Remember the Fallen". Enjoy.
Remember the Fallen[]
It was a typical day in Yharnam, bright and sunny outside. It was in the fall, and the air was nice and cool.
It was about the middle of the afternoon as two men were making their way up a large hill. The one in the lead was fairly tall, devilishly handsome, had long blonde hair, was light skinned, had a decently grown beard, and was carrying a map. The other one was average height, muscular, also handsome, had black hair pulled back into a ponytail, brown skin, no facial hair, and was carrying a hiking stick.
“Logan”, the blonde one said. “We’re almost there.”
“Right behind you, Brandon”, Logan said.
A few minutes later, Logan and Brandon made it to the top of the hill they were climbing. They made it to a grave that bore the name Atticus Draconis. The two men kneeled down in front of the grave, and bowed their heads.
“I can’t believe it’s already been a year since he’s been gone”, Logan said.
“Me neither”, Brandon responded. “He was always there for us. It’s so hard being here without our father.”
“It has been, brother”, Logan said. The two then started getting teary eyed. Logan took out a compass that had Atticus’ name engraved on it, and placed it on the grave. “Can we go now? I don’t think I can be here any longer.”
“Logan”, Brandon said. “Show some respect.”
“This place makes me sad”, Logan said.
“It does the same to me, but do remember what dad said about visiting our mothers’ graves?” Brandon asked.
“I know”, Logan responded. “It’s terrible that we both lost our mothers at young ages, and now we lost our father.”
“I know”, Brandon said. “Let’s go. I suppose I’ll see you at your place later?”
“Will you?” Logan asked.
“It’s Tuesday”, Brandon said as he leaned his head to the left.
“That’s right”, Logan responded. “Chess night. I’ll see you tonight.” The brothers both went their separate ways.
Logan returned to his log cabin out in the forest, which was in an area formerly known as the Forbidden Woods. He had found it unoccupied and in very poor condition, so he moved in and renovated it. He decided to live out in the woods so he wouldn’t have to pay rent. The log cabin consisted of three rooms: Logan’s bed room, a bathroom, and a main room. He kept the bedroom simple: it contained a fairly sizable bed, a bedside table with a lamp and alarm clock on it, and a dresser where he kept all of his clothes. The main room contained a fireplace, where Logan set up a cooking spit. There was a couch in the middle of the room, and a coffee table in front of it, which had Logan’s chess board on it, as well as two tables on both sides, both decorated with lamps. Logan had set up electricity for the house, and installed a ceiling fan and a useful new invention, a refrigerator. On both sides of the door, there were a few bookshelves. On the right wall, there was a large Thracian flag, which was dark blue and displayed a red snake, which Logan kept as a tribute to his idol, Harold Jenkins.
Brandon, on the other hand, lived in a fairly nice house in Central Yharnam. It was two stories, well decorated with a lot of middle class style furniture, had electricity, several electric devices, a few mannequins with armor on them, weapon racks, and three bedrooms, all well decorated. Unlike Logan’s cabin, Brandon had a nice kitchen, where he did a lot of cooking, like his father had taught him. His home was inherited from his and Logan’s father, Atticus, and he promised himself to keep it in his family forever.
At about 7 A.M. Logan was getting ready for his brother’s arrival, and made himself some vegetable soup. He sat down on his couch in his pajamas, let his hair down, and began eating. After a few minutes, he heard a knock on his door. He answered it, and it was Brandon. He let his brother in, and two sat down on the couch.
“How are you, brother?” Brandon asked.
“I’m fine”, Logan answered. “How about you?”
“I’m doing pretty good”, Brandon said. “Ready to play chess?”
“I am”, Logan said. “Hopefully I’ll beat you this time”, he said with a smile.
“You can try, sucker”, Brandon said. Both brothers laughed. Logan stood up, and sat on the floor on the opposite side of his coffee table, letting Brandon sit on the couch as they played.
They started playing chess, and Brandon was winning. Logan decided to start up a conversation, to try to distract Brandon.
“So”, Logan said. “How’s life?”
“Good”, Brandon said. “How’s life for you?”
“It’s been hard”, Logan said. “Without our dad here, everything feels so weird.”
“Yeah, man”, Brandon said. “It’s so weird. Now, neither of us have any parents left.”
“You know, it still feels weird having to explain to people we meet that we’re half brothers”, Logan said. “It’s still awkward.”
“I know, man”, Brandon said. “Remember when dad taught us how to play chess?”
“How could I forget something like that?” Logan asked. “He would make us play against him, and if we lost, no cookies for dessert. Those were some fond memories.”
“It took me five years to beat him”, Brandon said.
“I never beat him”, Logan said.
“I know”, Brandon said. “Also, checkmate.” Logan lost chess again.
“God damn, Brandon”, Logan said. “How are you so good?”
“Practice makes perfect”, Brandon said, and let out a small laugh. “I should get going now.”
“Want some soup before you go?” Logan asked.
“No thank you”, Brandon responded as he stood up. “I have to go now.” He started walking to the door, but stopped before he went out. “Hey, Logan. Do you have a real job yet?”
“Being a lumberjack is a real job”, Logan said. “It pays well, and I enjoy doing it.”
“Fine”, Brandon said. “See you tomorrow.”
“See you tomorrow, Brandon”, Logan said as his brother left. Logan then got a book out of his bookshelf, laid down on his couch and started reading.
